FOUNDERS AWARD

Recognizes lawyers who exemplify professional excellence and outstanding community contributions

Edward H. Pappas is chairman emeritus and consulting member at Dickinson Wright PLLC. He has provided significant leadership throughout the state on a variety of important issues to the legal profession, including professionalism, civility, and access to justice. In addition, Pappas has mediated approximately 500 cases and believes that mediators play an important role in helping parties resolve disputes in a civil, respectful, and peaceful manner. Pappas is highly respected in Michigan’s legal community and has received numerous acknowledgements including the Robert P. Hudson Award, the State Bar of Michigan’s highest award. He served as President of the Michigan State Bar Foundation from 2018 – 2022 and a President of the State Bar of Michigan from 2008-2009. After his term as President of the SBM, he became active with the Foundation. Pappas remains a Secretary of the Foundation’s Fellows Program and continues to serve on the Foundation’s Access to Justice Campaign’s Steering and Fundraising Committees. Pappas is the current chair of the SBM’s ADR Section and is leading efforts to encourage mediators to volunteer with community dispute resolution centers and legal aid programs. Pappas also sits on the Board of Directors for Western Michigan University, Thomas Cooley Law School and is a Fellow of the American Bar Association and a Fellow of the Oakland County Bar Foundation.   

ACCESS TO JUSTICE AWARD

Honoring persons who have significantly advanced access to justice for low-income families in Michigan

Karen M. Tjapkes is the director of Litigation at Legal Aid of Western Michigan. She has been a practicing attorney with Legal Aid of Western Michigan for 23 years. As director of Litigation, Tjapkes oversees the program’s advocacy and service delivery, establishes goals and strategy for litigation, manages staff training and professional development, and assists with grant management. In her legal practice, she represents low-income and elderly clients in housing law, foreclosure, consumer law, bankruptcy, and public benefits matters. In addition, Tjapkes works with local, statewide, and national partners.  She co-chairs the Michigan Supreme Court’s Justice for All Commission Summary Proceedings Improvement Workgroup. She sits on the Steering Council of the Grand Rapids Area Coalition to End Homelessness and on the State Bar of Michigan’s Consumer Law Section Council. Tjapkes has also served as an Expert Advisor with the Center for Survivor Agency and Justice concerning consumer rights for domestic violence survivors. A sought-out presenter, Ms. Tjapkes speaks on housing, bankruptcy, and mortgage lending issues to many audiences, including the Michigan Foreclosure Prevention Project, the Michigan Poverty Law Program, the Debtor’s Bar of West Michigan, the Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing, and the National Consumer Law Center’s Consumer Rights Litigation Conference.
